Since that first meeting, from one September to another

tappa 91

17 September 1948

This morning in the seat of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, the angels paid me a visit: a Franciscan Capuchin, a Conventual, and a lay tertiary – a young girl, Silvia Lubig (sic!), who was starting a community movement in Trent. She spoke like one inspired by the Holy Spirit.

2 September 1949, Trent

Today, in the Laste Carmelite Church, I consecrated my whole life to the Lord with the formula Chiara Lubich gave me: «Jesus, I want to be yours in the way you wish; do what you want of me.».

May God take from me, my ego which is this shambles of a flood of sins. May he give me the oil of forgetfulness, so that I may see Him only, and his image in my brothers, and in nature which is his projection.

19 September 1955

And so, whether I am in the tram or office, or on the road, I am in your circuit oh Holy Trinity: You carry me in Yourself and I carry You in me, and upon going on towards physical death, I grow in You, climbing up the valleys of the mystical ascent. So this very boring, dull and sad thing that is life, in my old age becomes a youthful liberation, a flutter of wings to leap into eternity amid Your sun, oh increate Trinity, next to Mary and the saints, Paul, Augustine, Francis, Clair, Catherine and Theresa… toward this triumph of souls who will not die.

1 September 1958

Whoever misunderstands and offends us is a collaborator: he gives our day flavour and colour –  of the blood of Christ Crucified. Then when we feel abandoned, it is then that we are with Him on the cross, one with him who is abandoned, and we are the only Christ who cries out.

2 September 1958

If you empty yourself, God will fill you with Himself. If you put yourself on the grounds of humility, you put yourself on the plain of satisfaction, where the problems are resolved and where loving poverty, you do not seek riches. You free yourself from economic woes so feverishly suffered by humanity. Contrasts and misunderstanding become virtue which frees the spirit from the bonds of wounded pride. So you have no reason to put yourself above anyone and you offer yourself to charity which is life, the entire space to move around and rediscover the human family and the divine Trinity, the Church and the lively co-citizens of Saints. You will be in humility, simplicity and ease, and above all in liberty. You become an imitator of Mary whose humbleness allowed the Incarnation to take place, and in a sense, you also become God for humanity.

8 September 1959

Today, is the Nativity of Mary, while I am preparing to leave for Catania to speak at the Eucharistic Congress, the Holy Spirit in particular comes to mind. Of the three Persons who are equal, he is the one who is less spoken of, while he is the one we most make use of, so to say, since he is precisely Love which serves, and hides himself. He gives without showing himself, like Mary. It’s another reason he occupies an ever greater place in our hearts.

24 September 1963

Sixty-nine years: a goal I reached without realising it. I promised then to do many things and the fruits gathered are nothing but what I promised to do. Evidently I hoed the soil, pruned and damaged things: the divine Farmer corrected and vivified.
And he led me to the fruit of solitude, like silence and quietness, to converse with Him and be with Him. Man has withdrawn for human motives, but at every withdrawal He came closer. Now, only He and I remain: the All and nothingness; Love and the beloved. And the dialogue is not disturbed by the noise of friends, clients… So if I return amid humans, it is only to love them, without the pretext of being loved in return. It is to serve them, without expecting to be served, not even by the ones closest to me for natural and supernatural reasons: so close and so remote! In this way, what seemed to be an abandonment resulted in a rediscovery of God – and in Him are the angels, the saints, Mary, and up to the last of those who died in grace. It seemed like a collapse and was instead an elevation to heaven. Instead of dispersion It was a liberation.
